A note about hobbies and interests:

I was homeschooled kindergarten - twelfth grade, which meant I had a lot of time after school to explore my interests. The house I grew up in had a group of outdoor sheds, each with a different purpose. My favorite was the shop, where my dad taught me to use tools and work with wood. My wooden swords and treasure boxes soon gave way to things I could put in my bedroom: bookshelves, sculptures, and an uncomfortable sofa.

My mom used to get irritated with me when I “strung out her sewing machine.” Nevertheless, she always showed me how to rethread her old singer because I never could remember how to do it. I made doll clothes and pillows and little stuffed animals. When I got a little older, I thrifted a sewing machine for $11 and never had to lug my moms machine out again. While it is mostly used for clothing alterations, my sewing machine has seen it all: butter yellow curtains, a batch of stockings at Christmastime, and a lamp shade sewn from thrifted fabric.
